How Awesome Is Our God?
We sing, “Our God is an Awesome God,” but is our God really AN awesome God? God is awesome, that part is definitely true, but He is not “an” awesome God. The word “an” is an “indefinite” article, referring to any member of a group. Our God is not part of a group of gods, He is THE God – and He is awesome!
How awesome is our God? With just the word of His mouth, the world and all things in
it were created. Not only did He create it, but He sustains it. He calls all the stars out by name (Psalm 146:4), and according to faq.com/astronomy, the Milky Way alone contains approximately 400 billion stars. Multiply that number by the 80 billion galaxies the Hubble telescope is capable of detecting (and there are probably more). That is 400 billion times 80 billion! And that is only a guess for Jeremiah 33:22 tells us, “the hosts of heaven (the stars) cannot be numbered, nor the sand of the sea measured…” Mathematicians at the University of Hawaii tried to guess the number of grains of sand by using a magnifying glass to count the number of grains that fit into a small section of a spoon. They came up with 7 quintillion 5 quadrillion grains of sand on just the world's beaches (miamisci.org).
Our God is too awesome for our finite minds to comprehend. Job, a righteous man, learned the sovereignty and power of God, and he said, “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You…i have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know” (Job 42:2,3). David said in Psalm 8:3-4, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?”
Our God is the awesome God! Just thinking of the magnitude, variety, and intricacies of creation can take our breath away. But even more awesome to me is that this great, powerful, and awesome God loves me! Loves us! We who spend our time on selfish pleasures instead of spending time with Him! He knew in advance that we would crucify His Son, yet His love for us was so great that He sent Jesus anyway. And after Jesus conquered death and went back to sit at the right hand of His Father, the Holy Spirit was sent to be with us and guide us. God gave us His written word with all His promises to us – “I will never leave you nor forsake you…” come unto Me and I will give you rest…” and “he who believes in Me has everlasting life” (John 6:47)!
