STORYTIME

-

stepped up and wanted to be a part of this event,” Loraine Walker, also known as Miss Rainey, said. “I think this is what really helped get people here - the promise of snow cones after an amazing story.”

Walker was ecstatic to have Stevens read to the children because, in a way, things kind of came full circle for the beloved children’s librarian at Starkville Public Library.

“Because of Bos, I got my first librarian job,” Walker said. “There was a position open in Maben and Bos was the director, and eventually I ended up out there. I’m so grateful for that opportunity because it’s led me here. I’m happy to have him out to read one of his books and maybe he’ll inspire one of these kids to become a librarian or a writer.”

This was the last storytime before June because Miss Rainey has a lot planned for the summer. For both June and July every Monday through Thursday, Miss Rainey will have programs out at Fire Station Park. Mondays are science STEAM days, Tuesdays are for robotics and coding, Wednesday will be storytime with live animals, and Thursdays will be art STEAM days.

Walker has been reaching out to local businesses to see if they are interested in helping out in providing things for the children to do during these days because she wants to keep everything local.

“I’m open to having any type of business come in and help,” Walker said. “Starkville has a lot to offer, and I think it’s important to show that but to also get the kids involved.”
