Bulldogs doing better job of being on same page under Leach

- By DANNY P. SMITH

Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has watched his Air Raid offense improve to the point where his team can now go on the road and defeat a ranked opponent.

That’s what the Bulldogs did when they upset then-no. 15 ranked Texas A&M 26-22 in College last Saturday.

MSU sophomore quarterback Will Rogers threw for 408 yards and received recognition from several direc- tions, including the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

During a Thursday postpractice media session, Leach

Station said Rogers and his wide receivers are beginning to click in the offense and the game against the Aggies is just an example of what can happen when everyone is on the same page.

“Some of what (Rogers) was able to do is a byproduct of the receivers being in the right spot and more precise, and the offensive line protected better,” Leach said. “It’s just a lot more precise when he knows where they are going to be and they know where he is going to throw it.”

Members of the MSU coaching staff spent the first part of the open date week recruiting, then the Bulldogs got back on the practice field Thursday and Friday.

Leach said the concentration in practice was on fundamentals with the ones on ones and twos on twos.

“It’s not unlike spring except for shorter practices,” Leach said. “We got to work the young guys. During the bye week, we will work the young guys. We just got done letting (the scout team) scrimmage and get good work with them.

“There are little things you can improve on and you just try to get better. If there is something glaring, you have to aggressively address it. Either keep running it, or run something different or replace guys.”

MSU, which stands 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SEC, will host No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, October 16, at 6 p.m.
