Halloween is sure to be a fun and safe holiday

- By JESSICA LINDSEY

Whether you are taking your children or grandchildren trick-or-treating or staying home and passing out candy, this Halloween holiday is sure to be something special for all who decide to take part.

The entire week has been jam-packed with fun events for children, pets, and families to attend in case they could not make it out to trick-or-treat on the day of Halloween. From pet parades to library events to Downtown Pumpkinpalooza, there has been no shortage of fun and opportunity to get a full wear out of fun and scary costumes.

Starkville’s trick-or-treating timespan for today is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. While trick-or-treating, passing out candy, or navigating the roads, there are important safety tips to remember to make sure everyone has a fun time.

First and foremost, if you are not passing out candy, make sure your front door light is off. The front door light being on is the universal sign that you are passing out candy and that your house is open to trick-or-treaters.

When passing out or going through your children’s goodies, make sure the edible treats are unopened. Unopened treats ensure that nothing has been tampered with, and the candy is safe. Also, make sure there are no sharp objects in your children’s bags as well.

While walking when it is dark, make sure you are safe by wearing reflective or bright clothing so cars may see you. Drivers must also be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters around the allotted 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. timespan as they start and finish their routes.

Because of the nature of the holiday, many people will be in dark color costumes, so be extremely careful while driving. As a pedestrian, you can never be too careful when navigating the streets of Starkville.

The most important thing is to have good and safe fun during Halloween. Because of Covid, participation has been limited, so children are very excited for the spooky holiday this year.
