Modern Woodmen to Conduct Gun Raffle for Sheriff’s Office

- For Starkville Daily News

As has become an annual tradition, Barbara Coats with Modern Woodmen of America, in partnership with Security Solutions and Army Navy Pawn & Gun, will soon begin selling raffle tickets for a 31day gun giveaway to benefit the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office. In recent years, these funds have been used to provide new bullet-proof vests, beanbag guns, vehicle gun racks, improvements to the jail, up-to-date weapons, and even a workout facility for the Sheriff’s office staff during COVID.

Says Coats, “This is the sixth year I have coordinated this raffle with the Sheriff’s office. We are incredibly proud to have put back more than $125,000 into our county without asking for county funds. It is important to note that this effort wouldn’t work, however, without the tremendous efforts of the SO staff to get the tickets sold.” Coats encourages anyone who wants a ticket to act fast. “In 2020, we sold all one thousand tickets in eight days.”

Tickets go on sale November 1, and the drawings are held each day in December.

Only 1,000 tickets are sold at a cost of $40 per ticket. Participants must be legally able to own a gun and must pass a background screening. Checks are acceptable and should be made payable to “SO Auxiliary”. Each day’s winner is posted on the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, as well as on Coats’ personal page.

A new partner this year is Army Navy Pawn & Gun, where owner Lee Carlisle has the raffle guns on display now through the last day of the giveaway in December. Tickets may be purchased from any deputy or department staff, by calling the Sheriff’s office at 662-323-2421 or stopping by the office.
