Miss Starkville Hospitality speaks to Kiwanis

During the Kiwanis Club of Starkville’s meeting on Tuesday, the Kiwanians were treated by a visit from this year’s Miss Starkville Hospitality, Claire Farmer.

A graduate of Starkville Academy and current Mississippi State freshman, Farmer said she was honored to have the Kiwanis Club ask her to come speak.

“In my role, I’ve met some of our community’s youngest and most seasoned residents,” Farmer said.

Farmer recently participated in this past weekend’s Veterans Day parade to celebrate and honor those who previously and currently serve our country.

“I was so honored to be a part of our third annual Veterans Day parade and celebrate our heroes,” Farmer said.

This past summer, Farmer was presented with the opportunity to represent Starkville on stage in Hattiesburg, where she was tasked with informing the other participants, the judges, and the audience about all the things Starkville has to offer.

“After all, who else can say they are the 2021 College World Series champions?” said Farmer. “In addition to our beautiful university, our charming downtown, and our delightful dining options, we have the best MSU fans right here in Starkvegas.”

As an art major at MSU, Farmer hopes to inspire others to recognize the beauty in our wonderful Mississippi home.

Ever since she became Miss Hospitality for Starkville, the biggest thing Farmer said she has learned is more about the city she has called home since she was in the sixth grade.

“I’ve definitely learned a lot more about Starkville, and I’ve become more involved. I’ve been here since sixth grade when my family moved her from Paducah, Kentucky, and I just see things in a different outlook

now, especially at State,” said Farmer. “Being on campus now and being on campus as a high school student, those are two different worlds. I’ve also had the opportunity to meet Mayor Lynn Spruill, which is something among all the other different opportunities I would not have had by just being a regular student.”

Farmer is also a part of the on-campus organization Hands and Feet, where it is the hope is that each member will develop a lifelong sense of service to his or her community, wherever that community is. To achieve that goal, members participate in regular service projects for the community.

“We did one for a nursing home here in town where we made flower bouquets for them and put in some little inspirational quotes to just help them get through their day. We’ve also done several projects with the Starkville and West Point animal shelters where we walk dogs, take pictures to promote them on social media accounts to let

people know these dogs need a home,” said Farmer. “The most recent one we did was this past weekend where we wrote inspirational quotes on the sidewalks all in the downtown area, just to give people a good Monday experience to start off their week.”

Kiwanis Club of Starkville meets every Tuesday at noon at the Hilton Garden Inn.
