Katherine Bowman loves Starkville’s small-town feel
Katherine Bowman is one who did not grow up in Starkville but learned to love it as if she did.
It was during her later years of high school when Bowman had to move from Dothan, Alabama to Starkville after her dad accepted a new job as an electrical engineer for Atwell & Gent.
Now, Bowman is currently pursuing her master’s degree at Mississippi State in political science, and she is also the manager for the Starkville Habitat for Humanity Restore in the city she now loves.
“I like how Starkville has plenty of things to do, but still has that small town feel, if that makes sense. There’s always stuff to do at the university and stuff going on that in the city, and there’s plenty of sports events to attend,” said Bowman. “I like Starkville a lot for that, but what I like most about it is the number of relationships with the people I have met since moving here; they have a special place in my heart.”
In her role at the Habitat Restore, Bowman sets up work schedules, runs the cash register, opens the cash drawer, comes up with the sales the store will have for the week, but what she loves most about her job is the Habitat for Humanity’s mission.
“Our mission is to make sure everyone has a decent place to live, so all the proceeds we get at the Restore go towards building Habitat homes in the community, which is a cause I am behind,” Bowman said.
Another part of Bowman’s job is to manage the volunteers that come through and help at the Restore.
“We depend on them to keep the store running efficiently, so we love our volunteers,” said Bowman. “We just had a Thanksgiving celebration for our volunteers and staff because we’re so thankful for them during this holiday time of thankfulness.”
Outside of work, Bowman spends most of her time studying for her master’s courses at MSU. When
she has free time, she likes to spend it reading books, watching anime, and playing video games.
She also enjoys spending time with her husband, Kendall Comish, and their two dogs: Ares, who is a Bassetbeagle mix, and Stuart, who is a Boxer mix.
The story of how Bowman met her soulmate is one that dates back to her freshman year at MSU.
“I actually met Kendall freshman year at Mississippi State. We were in Mrs. Edmonds’ public speaking class. We both had crushes on each other, but we didn’t say anything. During junior year, we then reconnected through a friend. So, that’s when we started dating and the rest is history,” Bowman
said.
Bowman added that her husband is also in graduate school at MSU, where he is also a teacher assistant for Early U.S. History classes.
If you see Bowman around town, make sure you tell her hello.
