Rogers shattering records through the MSU Air Raid

- By ROBBIE FAULK

It was just a matter of time in Mike Leach’s Air Raid before the records began to shatter at Mississippi State and he has a quarterback that’s doing it in year two.

Will Rogers broke the Bulldog record for singleseason passing and the school’s touchdown record on Saturday in the first quarter against Tennessee State. The 30th touchdown of the season came during his first possession of the game with a 21-yard pass to Austin Williams for the score. He broke the passing yardage record when he completed a pass to Jamire Calvin in the second possession.

“I’m pleased,” Leach said. “I’m not really surprised. We’re out there at practice and watching the film and we’re a very young team so the more reps we get, they improve quicker when they’re younger. He’s done a pretty good job.”

It’s already been a remarkable statistical season for Rogers in year two of college football. He became the first player in MSU history on Saturday to throw for over 4,000 yards in a season as he sits at 4,113 this year with two games to spare. He’s also thrown for a school-record 34 touchdowns and only has eight interceptions.

According to MSU’S media relations, Rogers is one of just four quarterbacks in the country since 2000 that has thrown for over 3,700 yards, passed for over 25 touchdowns and completed 75% of his passes in a season.

Rogers is on pace to break his own record of 69% completion percentage as he has improved even upon that at over 75% coming into Saturday’s game. He leads the Southeastern Conference in completion percentage, completions per game, passing yards, passing yards per game and total offense per

game.

The record-breaking performance for Rogers surpassed Dak Prescott’s senior campaign numbers as the talented quarterback from Brandon is rewriting the record books in every passing way possible.

Being mentioned in the same conversation as Prescott at this stage in his career is what’s really special for the Mississippi native.

“Anytime you can have your name in the same company as Dak Prescott is pretty incredible,” Rogers said. “I never imagined that would happen. I’ve been watching Dak since fifth or sixth grade and the things that he’s done here is amazing.”

It’s been an eye-popping season for Rogers as a second-year starter. He’s completed better than 70% of his passes in all but two games and 300 or more yards in all but one. In his last two contests, Rogers has registered 400 or more yards and a total of 10 touchdowns to one interception.

His career numbers are rising up the charts as well as

he’s thrown for over 6,089 yards, 45 touchdowns and just 15 picks.

Rogers is a three-time SEC Offensive Player of the Week and was National Player of the Week by multiple publications last week after the win at Auburn. He is a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy for the best player in the state of Mississippi.
