OCHS in need of blankets for pets

- By JESSICA LINDSEY

As the weather gets cooler, it is important to remember that just because animals have fur does not mean they cannot get cold. Pets get cold just like people do, and the cold can mean life or death for some animals.

On November 20, Starkville’s Animal Control tweeted, “It’s steadily getting colder and we just want to remind everyone you should bring your pups in.”

Since then, there have been a couple of freeze warnings at night for the area, so it only stresses the importance of keeping the fluffy friends warm.

It is incredibly important to bring pets inside during cold nights or make sure that their outdoor shelters have the right insulation to keep them warm. The Oktibbeha County Humane Society is also in need of old blankets to keep their pets warm during the colder months.

OCHS is looking for all types of blankets because they have all types of animals at the shelter.

“While our residents await their furrever families blankets provide a comfortable bed yearround. However, these are especially important in the cool winter months — for both warmth and comfort,” OCHS wrote in a Facebook post. “We’re currently in short supply of blankets that are safe and warm enough for our residents and we’re reaching out to our community for help.”

They are looking for any new or lightly-used blankets, towels or flat sheets that anyone is willing to part with. Because dogs, especially puppies, like to chew and tear at things, anything that may fall into what they need should not contain any type of stuffing as it poses an incredible risk for their stomachs. For their feline friends, OCHS is in search of small knit blankets or smaller blankets, in general.

If you have blankets, towels, or sheets you would like to donate to the Oktibbeha County Humane Society, you may drop them off at the Starkville Animal Shelter located at 510 Industrial Park Road in Starkville.
