Softball gives us quite a bit of news over past week
I
t was very fitting that only two days after East Webster won its eighth state championship in fast pitch that the sport of softball gave us more news to highlight in the area.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs achieved a major accomplishment by winning four elimination games in two days, including two victories over the No. 2 national seed Florida State Seminoles, to capture the NCAA Tallahas- see Regional championship and reach the school's firstever softball super regional.
Over the last two weeks, MSU has been getting excellent pitching from starters
Annie Willis, Kenley Hawk and Aspen Wesley. They were instrumental again in leading the Bulldogs to success in Tallahassee.
MSU'S pitching and timely hitting from the offense was key in accomplishing what it did. It was no easy task to defeat Howard and South Florida, then Florida State twice.
There were probably some that wrote the Bulldogs off after they lost to South Florida 4-0 to open the regional. Anyone who has watched MSU play during the course of the season knew it was not going down without a fight.
The Bulldogs have players that don't know the meaning of the word quit. They have one of the best players in the country with Mia Davidson, but the roster is dotted with many good players. Chloe Malau'ulu, Shea Moreno and Matalasi Faapito came up with some key RBIS during the second game against the Seminoles.
During the regional run and really the entire season, the motto of MSU has been “why not us?” That quickly changed to “it is us,” when the last out was recorded and the Bulldogs had clinched a spot in a super regional.
MSU now gets to host a super regional at Nusz Park on Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday. The Bulldogs get home-field advantage and it's going to be interesting to see what they can do with it.
If MSU continues to get the pitching it has over the last couple of weeks and the offense provides something here and there, there is no reason to doubt why the Bulldogs can't continue to say “it is us” all of the way to Oklahoma City and the Women's College World Series.
