State players begin to enter transfer portal

- By ROBBIE FAULK

It's been expected for a few weeks to this point but players are starting to find their way from Mississippi State's baseball roster to the transfer portal as the season has come to an end.

With exit interviews finishing up between head coach Chris Lemonis and his staff with the players, names are beginning to enter that realm and look for a new place to play baseball. Sources indicate that the most recent trio to enter are senior left-handed pitcher Andrew Walling, sophomore right-handed pitcher Mikey Tepper and freshman right-handed pitcher Bradley Wilson.

Walling was expected to be the highest touted of the group after the lefty came from junior college at Eastern Oklahoma after a stint with Oregon State. He was a player that was throwing in the mid-to-high 90s with his fastball and a good mixture of pitches but struggled to find the zone.

After being considered a draft risk last July, Walling made it to campus but only played in three games this season. He threw three innings, gave up two hits, four runs, walked seven batters, hit another and struck out four. All of his hits and runs came against Tennessee and he struck out the side in that game as well.

Tepper was another player that was a draft risk and he turned down the chance to go pro to come to school. After going 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings in 2021, Tepper struggled to find consistency with the strike zone this year. He had a 9.49 ERA for the year in 24.2 innings giving up 25 hits, 26 runs, 25 walks and he struck out 29.
