Jackets host NEMCABB regional action in Starkville
There will be regional baseball in Starkville afterall. Even though Mississippi State's baseball season did not end with the Bulldogs hosting an NCAA Regional, the city will be buzzing with tournament action next week.
The Starkville Daily News has learned that Starkville High School has been granted its request to have a Northeast Mississippi Coaches Association for Better Baseball re- gional at Yellow Jacket Field/ Carslie Stadium on June 16.
This will be a great opportunity for SHS, which has participated in the NEMCABB summer league the last few years, but has always had to travel to New Hope for a regional.
The Jackets will welcome in Amory and Houston for three games with times approximately 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. That will make for a full day of interesting competitive baseball and should be fun to watch.
Coach Luke Adkins' SHS summer squad has played a pair of games so far this month, both against New Hope. The Jackets defeated the Trojans 10-5 at home on Monday and travel over to Lowndes County for an outing Thursday night.
After giving up a pair of runs to New Hope in the first inning on Monday, Starkville immediately responded with a nine-spot in its half of the frame.
The Jackets can be really impressive offensively when they get on a roll. With hitters like Kieran Coleman, Brennon Wright and Ethan Pulliam at the top of the lineup, Starkville can do damage quickly.
Not exactly sure what the Jackets will do on the mound, but appear to have plenty of arms to get the job done. Kieran and his brother Jonas Coleman are capable hurlers, but Pulliam and Otto Hyche can also throw. On Monday, SHS used Jonas Coleman, Luke Collier and Cam Petty on the mound and each had some bright moments.
The Jackets have one more tune up game on Monday at home against West Point, then will look ahead to the NEMCABB regional.
If you are in town on June 16, it's worth going to check out some of the action. Having baseball in Starkville is never a bad thing.
