College baseball has certainly thrown plenty of curves our way

There has been a curve ball or two thrown at us during this year's NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Expecting the unexpected has become a theme when it comes to filling out the bracket for the tournament in recent history. My co-worker Cal Brown was bold enough to give it a try and Stanford was the only team he had correctly going to the College World Series.

It's certainly an interesting field that will be competing for the college baseball national championship in Omaha, Nebraska, this year.

If the College World Series takes a similar path as the one we just witnessed in the NCAA Super Regionals, then there will be more surprises ahead in the next couple of weeks.

At least the College World Series will be played at a neutral site. The super regionals were not very kind to the home team in most cases.

Notre Dame defeated the top overall seed Tennessee on the road. That was unexpected.

Auburn knocked off No. 3 national seed Oregon State on the road. That was unexpected.

Oklahoma also went on the road and dismissed No. 4 national seed Virginia Tech from the NCAA Tournament. That was unexpected.

Ole Miss swept No. 11 national seed Southern Miss easily on the road. That was unexpected.

In all, six of the eight road teams won super regionals.

It's still very important to have home field advantage for regionals and super regionals, but this is an era where road teams can overcome being in unfamiliar surroundings.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs certainly have had an edge in the postseason when it comes to playing at Dudy Noble Field.

When considering the run the Bulldogs went on last season to win the national championship, they won a regional in Starkville and swept Notre Dame, which we have come to find in the last few days is a very good baseball team, in a super regional at Dudy Noble Field.

MSU used that momentum and went on to win the College World Series. That was a feat unexpected by most. Of course, the Bulldog faithful were hopeful that the program could claim the one thing it was missing and that's the first national title, but how many really expected it? Be honest.

This year's College World Series will be a wide open event. There are four Southeastern Conference teams present that could be considered favorites.

There is really no way to know for sure what to expect.
