WSHE’s Sonny Fox still rocking … online

- By Johnny Diaz Staff writer

Whatever happened to longtime South Florida radio deejay Sonny Fox? He has a newhome.

The former WSHE- FM103.5 personality is the latest addition to an Internet network of Web- based radio programs called SouthFloridaRock.com, based out of Lauderhill.

Joining the ranks of other former WSHE deejays like Cory James and Robin Martin, Fox shares stories about the nowdefunct classic rock station on “Foxcast,’’ an interview show with comedians and celebrities that follows a similar format to what he did on WSHE. The show airs 3 to 4 p. m. Fridays on ShesOnlyRocknRoll.com, which pays tribute to the former classic rock station that ran fromthe 1970s to1995.

These Web- based radio programs are recapturing the sound and feel of defunct stations to give rock fans a little bit of old South Florida radio nostalgia.

“The classic rock on [ ShesOnlyRock nRoll.com] is the same music that you would have heard on ‘ SHE.’ We try to get them as close as to how they sounded,” said Alan Michaels, the former radio veteran who runs the SouthFloridaRock.com network. “When you listen to these stations, you are listening to people who were on those stations.”

The network also includes “Zeta” ( WZTA- FM 94.9). TheWeb version, Zeta Radio. com, plays alternative and modern rock from the 1980s and 1990s.

Of course, listeners can always turn to satellite radio. But with the rise of smartphones, tablets and other online devices, Michaels thinks the lack of rock on terrestrial radio helps Web radio outlets that have a unique South Florida sensibility.

He’s driven by his love of radio, adding: “Unfortunately, the industry has changed, where people are flocking to the Internet instead of the FM.”
