- — MelindaWaldrop

Beating the two- time defending Class6A state champion was a tall enough order for Pembroke Pines Charter. Miami Norland twin towers TyrellWilliams and Dewan Huell made it all but impossible.

The 6- foot- 10 Huell scored 15 points and Williams, who is 6- 7 1⁄ 2, blocked five shots as theVikings handled the Jaguars in the region championship at ArchbishopMcCarthy.

“You can’t simulate length like that,” Norland coach LawtonWilliams said.

Williams blocked back- toback shots in the first quarter as the Vikings ( 25- 5) built a six- point lead, which stretched to nine as the pressure grew on the Jaguars ( 21- 7) to knock down every semi- open look. Williams’ fourth block came in the second quarter, and Norland led by seven at the half.

Huell’s six- point burst, which included a one- handed slam and another dunk, put the Vikings up 31- 20 with 6: 08 left in the third quarter, but back- to- back threepointers from Pembroke Pines cut into the lead. Dimitri Harper’s rebound and put back made it a 35- 32 game with 2: 03 to play in the third.

Norland answered with a 13- 0 run to put the game away. The decisive burst began with Williams passing out of a double team to Huell, who hit a cutting Zachary Johnson, who scored a game- high 19 points, and ended with Dalvin Roberts’ layup to make it 48- 32 with 5: 18 remaining in the game.

Haniff Cheatham led the

Jaguars with16 points.
