Trying to find win-win with student loans
The purpose of this Letter to the Editor is to encourage a dialogue on how we, as a country, might help our college graduates pay their student loan debt.
Is it possible to think of a win-win way to help our college graduates pay their student loan debt?
Would it be possible for those who employ university developed intellectual talent to contribute to an individual student loan repayment fund for which they would receive a tax benefit?
This would create a win-win situation for: a) the student, b) the employer, c) the lender, d) the people of the United States by unburdening its future leaders from debt.
Dr. Robert Maynard, president of the University of Chicago, spoke at Florida Atlantic University on The Future University in 1973. He stated that: “The American University is what it is because that is what the American people want it to be or have let it become. These institutions are thought of as a means to the prosperity and power of the individual and the state. Those who expect financial benefits from attending universities should watch out for the boomerang. If the object of higher education is to help a student get ahead in life, then he should repay the full cost of it as soon as he can. If education is solely a consumer good, the state’s relation to the student is exactly what it would be if it had advanced him the money for a Cadillac.”
