Man wounded in drive-by

Laura Lavelle, 49, was walking into the living room of her West Park home Saturday morning when she heard a gunshot.

“As soon as I heard the noise, I could see the white van through the window,” Lavelle said. “It hesitated, stopped, like a drive-by. I’m in shock.”

A man was wounded in a shooting in the 4600 block of Southwest 33rd Drive, said Keyla Concepcion, Broward Sheriff’s an.

“The shooting victim got into a fight with a male,” Concepcion said. “A friend of the male, who was inside a van, shot the victim and fled.”

Deputies responded to the shooting site at 8:11 a.m.

The wounded man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood with injuries that did not appear life-threatenin­g, Concepcion said.

Lavelle identified the wounded man as Steve Jankowski, 50. He has lived with

spokeswom- Lavelle and two others in her West Park home for about three years, she said. “[The bullet] nicked him in his arm,” Lavelle said. “He was shaving. He had just walked out. He was in the doorway.”

Deputies cordoned off the street in front of Lavelle’s house for about two hours. She and her two other roommates were detained for questionin­g within the police perimeter.

The case is under investigat­ion, Concepcion said.
