Body found by canal
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s detectives investigating man discovered west of Boca Raton
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the discovery of a man’s body early Sunday.
A fisherman boating near the 19000 block of 120th Avenue South, west of Boca Raton, saw a man lying near the embankment of the canal about 8 a.m., investigators said.
He was concerned so he immediately called 911 to alert deputies and fire rescue personnel. When they arrived they confirmed the male was dead, officials said.
Detectives from the sheriff ’s Violent Crimes Division as well as Crime Scene Investigators were at the scene seeking to identify the body and determine the circumstances surrounding the death, authorities said.
The area where the body was found is on the fringe of the Everglades. Deputies blocked off Kimberly Boulevard at 118th Avenue South.
The only people allowed to have access to the area were those who lived in the large homes surrounded by horse paddocks, sprawling landscapes and four-foot high fencing.
The occasional bicycle rider, jogger or passerby would stop momentarily out of curiosity, gaze at the patrol cars about 100 yards away, then continue on their way.
The few who drove or walked out of the cordoned-off area declined to share what they saw.
A small cluster of news media cameras and vehicles lined the gravel road that runs parallel to the slimy green canal along Old Everglades Pump Road.
No specific information about the dead man, any possible suspect or a motive was available Sunday afternoon.
