Florida abortion bill is a huge step backward

-

Last week, Gary Stein asked readers, “Should the Florida Legislature restrict abortion?” My answer is a resounding “no.” I was so disheartened to see that the Legislature had passed a bill that would force women who have made the decision to have an abortion to make two separate trips, 24 hours apart, before having the procedure. This bill places unnecessary hurdles in front of women by delaying time-sensitive medical care and requiring multiple trips to the doctor for no medical reason.

This is a huge step backward and is another example of how our legislative leaders do not have women’s best interests at heart.

This measure would further traumatize rape survivors, who may not seek medical care or report incidents due to fear, stigma and other barriers.

We can’t stand for a bill like this to be signed into law. I urge your readers to call Gov. Scott’s office and ask him to veto this bill.
