Hank Goldberg starts radio show on 640-AM

- By Dave Hyde Staff writer

South Florida talk? show pioneer Hank Goldberg is back on the local airwaves with a regular, weekday show that started Monday on 640?AM from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. What to expect? Well ...

“I was having lunch at Joe’s [Stone Crab] last Tuesday with Dean Colson and Mike Abrams,’’ Goldberg said in a telephone interview Monday morning.

“Dean, of course, is a University of Miami board of trustee and Mike is a major lobbyist. There was a former judge sitting at the next table who, like me, is a senior citizen.

“He’d been off the bench for years. Like me at ESPN, they decided it was time for him to get off the bench. He went back to practicing law just like I was starting up again. He said, ‘You’re going to love starting over.’ That’s how I feel. I’m going to love it.”

On his first show, Goldberg planned to talk about picking the Kentucky Derby Superfecta that paid $630.

“The guy at ESPN didn’t do so hot,’’ he said of his replacement.

He said he’d also talk about the Mayweather? Pacquiao fight.

“I’m going to talk about how they did [CNN’s] Rachel Nichols a favor by revoking her credential. That fight was a stiff,” he said.

There’s Goldberg’s show in a few paragraphs: name? dropping, good storytelling, hard opinions and, of course, himself.

Goldberg has worked in local radio for more than 40 years, including stints at WQAM and WIOD.

“The Hammer” also had a 20-year run at ESPN, covering the NFL, making predictions and delivering horse racing analysis.
