AROUND THE HORN

-

Rangers: Josh Hamilton played in extended spring training for the Rangers on Monday, his first game of any kind since last October. Hamilton struck out once and hit three grounders to first base in Arizona, a week after the Angels completed a trade that sent the slugger back to Texas. He played three innings in left field.

Brewers: Former infielder Craig Counsell was hired to manage the Brewers, about 12 hours after the team fired Ron Roenicke. Counsell, 44, spent the final five seasons of his 16-year major-league career with the Brewers, retiring after the 2011 season. He has no previous managing or coaching experience. The Brewers entered play Monday last in the NL Central at 7-18.

Red Sox: Left fielder Hanley Ramirez left Monday’s game against the Rays after running into a side wall while attempting to make a catch. Ramirez ran toward the corner for James Loney’s slicing fly ball along the foul line. He had it in his glove before it popped out when his left shoulder hit the padded wall.

Blue Jays: Hitting coach Brook Jacoby was suspended 14 games for his postgame conduct toward the umpires following an April 29 game at Boston. The Blue Jays intend to appeal Jacoby’s suspension and will not comment until their appeal is heard. Coaches and managers are required to begin serving their suspensions as soon as they are issued. Jacoby began serving his Mondaynight against the Yankees.
