He was a self-proclaimed voodoo priest, police said, and he told his followers he had healing powers.

Brogenet Cinor told officers he has worked with voodoo magic for the past 30 years and has cleansed souls haunted by evil spirits. That’s how he met awoman and her 11-year-old daughter.

Now, Cinor is accused of raping the girl while she was a middle school student. The girl, now16, told Sunrise police officers Cinor had sex with her because he was “cleansing” the evil spirits that lived inside of her.

On Friday, Sunrise police held a news conference in an effort to find other people who may have had unwanted sex with Cinor to “cleanse evil spirits.” They said he’s been practicing as a voodoo priest in the city for almost a decade.

Cinor, 48, was arrested June 19. He faces one count of sexual battery on a child less than 12 years of age. He was released from the Broward County Jail on June 20 on a bond of $75,000.

Cinor’s attorney, Brian Silber, said his client vehemently denies these allegations, and that his innocence will be proven in court.

At Cinor’s house on Friday, no one answered the door, but someone did throw a large piece of a rock at reporters congregated outside.

In 2009, the girl and her mother visited Cinor for a spiritual reading, Sunrise police Officer Cindi McCue said. As Cinor monitored the girl’s mother, he said he felt evil spirits coming from her11-year-old daughter.

He took the girl into a private shed that resembled a tiki hut, police said, and had sex with her.

A few weeks later, McCue said, the girl told her mother what had happened. She confronted Cinor and he threatened to curse her if she said anything about the accusation.

“Hewas using the victims’ belief in voodoo and curses,” she said. “They believed they could die if they didn’t followhis instructions.”

Police were notified in 2014 after the girl told her father what happened, police said.

Two years earlier, two other women went to police about being coerced into sex with Cinor because he said they needed a spiritual cleansing, police said.

One of the women said she and Cinor had sex multiple times and that she became pregnant with their child. The woman told police he offered her $450 to get an abortion, according to the arrest report.

Another woman told police Cinor told her if they did not have sex to cleanse the spirits, she would die. She told police she became pregnant and Cinor gave her $500 to get an abortion.

McCue said the Broward County State Attorney’s Office closed those cases and declined to prosecute.

Investigators ask anyone with information regarding Cinor to call detectives at the Sunrise Police Department at 954-746-3569.

“This is a very concerning crime for us, especially because of the young age of the victim,” McCue said. “She was 11-years-old, engaging in sexual activity under the guise of fear.”
