Program can provide free eye care services Tips from Sally Deneen.
Here is a way to possibly get a free eye exam if you’re at least age 65 and don’t have insurance that covers eye care: Volunteer ophthalmologists provide free eye care to people who qualify through EyeCare America, a program of the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
To see if you qualify, go to EyeCareAmerica.org. For example, you can’t belong to an HMO and you can’t have eye care coverage with the Veterans Affairs. The website says that if you “have not seen an EyeMD in three or more years,” then you “may be eligible to receive a comprehensive medical eye exam and up to one year of care at no out-of- pocket cost for any disease diagnosed during the initial exam.”
There are caveats: The deal doesn’t cover eyeglasses or hospitalization, if needed. If you’re on Medicare, your co-payment will be waived and Medicare reimbursement will be accepted as payment in full.
More free movies for kids: I recently mentioned the free movie promotion at Davie’s Paragon Ridge 8, where tickets for familyfriendly movies are offered this summer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.
It turns out that Cobb Theatres also are showing kid-friendly movies for free on the same weekdays at 10 a.m. this summer, ending Aug. 6, at its Downtown 16 theater in Palm Beach Gardens (561-2531444) and its Miami-Dade County theaters, including Miami Lakes 17 (305-5583810) and the Dolphin 19 in West Miami-Dade (305591-0785). This week, “Alpha & Omega” and “Tarzan” are showing. Next week’s films are “Astro Boy” and the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.”
