DELRAY BEACH — Barbara Gammage was in disbelief when her brother called her in the middle of the night, telling her that her son was shot dead.

It was just after 2 a.m. Aug. 22. And when Gammage arrived at the scene in the1100 block of W. Atlantic Ave., she saw that her son, Jamar Gammage, 26, wasn’t moving.

“By the time I got there, I found my baby lying on the ground with a white sheet over his face,” Barbara Gammage said Friday. “I’m heartbroken.”

Within 12 hours of the shooting, police had a suspect thanks to surveillance cameras and several witnesses coming forward. Their investigation culminated in an arrest Thursday.

A fugitive task force, including the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Marshals, arrested her son’s suspected killer, Dion Graham, 29, of Delray Beach, on Thursday.

He was tracked down in Lake Worth, Delray Beach police announced at a news conference Friday.

Still, the arrest leaves the grieving mother with more questions because Graham and her son were friends, constantly hanging out the Gammage home and eating the same table, she said.

She knows that eventually, Graham’s family will want to talk to her. She says she isn’t holding Graham’s mother or grandmother responsible for the killing of her only son.
