Bucks stomp Lightning, 35-14

- Staff reports — Tim Dwyer

DEERFIELD BEACH — Cavin Ridley showed why he is one of Broward County’s top recruits, hauling in five catches for 124 yards with a touchdown and an extra-point reception, as Deerfield Beach defeated Cypress Bay 35-14 in a season-opening, non-district game for both schools.

Ridley, a Super 11 selection who has more than 10 college offers, made his presence known immediately Friday night. On the first play from scrimmage, the 6-foot-2 senior caught a short pass from Alec Brown and sprinted the better part of 70 yards for the touchdown.

From there, the Bucks (1-0) took advantage of three first quarter fumbles by the Lightning to tack on 10 more points and take a commanding lead. Jimmie Harper’s fumble recovery, his first of two in the quarter, led to a 39-yard field goal by Jefferson Souza midway through the quarter.

Just before the end of the opening quarter, Kobe Farrish scored from 3 yards out after the Bucks were given a short field after Simeon Brown recovered a fumble on the Cypress Bay 7.

The Lightning (0-1) managed to get on the board in the second quarter, converting on a seven-play 45 yard drive, with quarterback Jake Nudelberg paying it off with a 4-yard sneak. Not surprisingly, the drive was set up by a turnover on a Christian Gomez interception.

Cypress Bay made the game interesting at the start of the second half, driving 80 yards on 11 plays for their second score. Nudelberg converted his second sneak on a fourth-and-one to cut the margin to six.

Later in the quarter Giavante Evans put the Bucks back in control with a 63-yard punt return for a score.

Brown finished 5 of 10 for 94 yards but was pulled in the second quarter for Teddrick Moffett after throwing back to back interceptions.
