Fire destroys boat in Pompano

- By Rebeca Piccardo Sun Sentinel

A plume of heavy smoke hung in the air over a Pompano Beach waterfront condominium Tuesday morning as a boat was engulfed in flames at the private docks.

City spokeswoman Sandra King said a boat caught fire and sank behind the Nobel Point Condominiums, 1100 SE Fifth St.

Sea Tow crews patrolguished ling the area followed the trail of smoke, then heard the fire engines arriving, said Sea Tow Capt. Tim Morgan.

Next to the blazing 25-foot vessel, a larger boat was starting to catch fire, Morgan said. Crews pulled up next to the 37-foot Formula boat, cut the lines and moved the craft to a nearby marina. The boat had been smoldering and had minor damage, Morgan said.

Firefighters extin- the blaze on the smaller boat, a 1979 Mako center console, but it was beyond saving. Sea Tow crews came back and retrieved the sunken vessel, Morgan said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Pompano Beach Fire Rescue investigators, King said.
