Terrorism is working to help Trump

I amnot a fan of DonaldTrump.

His speech to theRepublican Convention in Clevelandwas too long, tedious and with too many “I will do this. ... I will do that.” The speech had too many I’s formy taste.

In an American democracy, where there are three separate-butequal powers, there is noway Trump can simply make a speech fromthe WhiteHouse and— presto — it becomes the lawof the land.

TheUnited States is not another Latin American banana republic where what the caudillo says is law.

In his speech, Trumpdid not mention the need to have aRepublicanHouse and Senate. And he would also have to make sure his actions are constitutional. President Obama has seen some of his executive actions turned down by the Supreme Court. Trumpcan expect much of the same if he decides to govern by edict.

I repeat: I amnot aTrump fan.

But I understand thatTrumphas touched a very important nerve in the heart of the American voter. His refrain, “Iam the lawand order candidate,” rings true to thousands of Americans tired of seeing foreign and domestic acts of terrorism with increasing frequency. The attacks against police are repugnant and despicable.

Every time I see a cable news network interrupt its programto tell viewers of the latest act of mass violence— no matter foreign or domestic— I think: “This is something that will helpTrumpinNovember.”

I don’t believeone can blame Obama for all the violence in the world, but as president he is the only one who can directly or indirectly do something to stop it.

People in this great country wherewe live are not militaristic. It is quite the opposite. Convincing the American people to gowar is very hard. TheUnited States entered the WorldWar I only in its last year. And it entered theWorldWar II only after the Japanese attacked PearlHarbor

But when the American people say that is “enough,” it is wise to listen and avoid any provocation.

I believe the American people are getting close to say “enough.”

I amnot going to try and say who is the best candidate for president this year. I do not even knowwhom I amgoing to vote for. Neither of the two main candidates is particularly attractive.

But as a journalist, I amobliged to write what I see.

I see aHillary Clinton ready to continue the policies of President Obama. This are the same policies that have allowed all the violence in theUnited States and all over theworld to fester. Obama and Clinton do notwant to fight enemies of theUnited States, enemies who have already declaredwar on this country.

Obama and Clinton believe that jet fighter/bombers launched froman aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean is enough force to defeat the Islamic State. These planesmay help American allies in the region recapture lost terrain to the terrorists, but it will not put an end to the terrorist attacks in Europe and soon in theUnited States—for that is the Islamic State’s goal.

The American peoplewant to see this undeclaredwar come to an end. In the meantime, each time there is a terrorist attack, Trump’s chances of winning the election increase dramatically.

I repeat one last time: I amnot a Trumpsupporter. But despite all those who criticize his speech for being too “dark,” I believe the terrorist attacks are the most powerful weapon inTrump’s arsenal.

Thus, Iwould not be surprised if Trumpis the next president of the United States.
