Richt expects most freshmen to play

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

Lastweek, Hurricanes coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Manny Diaz both said they expected some of Miami’s youngest players would be called upon throughout the season.

Three days after the Hurricanes had to dismiss two defensive veterans — end Al-Quadin Muhammad and line backer Jermaine Grace— Richt reiterated the need for young players to step up during his weekly radio appearances on WQAM-560.

Some of the players Richt mentioned by name included receivers Ahmmon Richards, Sam Bruce and Dionte Mullins. He also said he expects freshman linebackers Shaquille Quarterman, Mike Pinckney and Zach McCloud to all start at some point this season.

“A lot of them will be getting reps, just normal snaps in our offense and defense,” Richt said of the freshmen.

The only two freshmen Richt said could potentially redshirt are quarterback Jack Allison and offensive tackle Tre Johnson.

Richt also praised Brad Kaaya’s development during the radio interview, noting the quarterback has improved on both throwing to his left and trusting the pocket around him.

“I don’t sit there and say he’s got the strongest arm I’ve ever seen … but he can get the ball downfield and throw a deep out,” Richt said.
