Marlins: OF Ichiro Suzuki’s fourth-inning single Monday against the Mets was his 3,010th career hit, which tied him with former Red Sox 3B Wade Boggs for 27th on the all-time list. He needs 10 more to match Rafael Palmeiro, who is in 26th place.
Red Sox: RHP Rick Porcello, who started against the Rays, was seeking to become just the fifth pitcher since 1900 to win his first 13 home decisions in a season.
Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Cole pitched five shaky innings in a 5-4 loss to the Astros on Wednesday and then let the team know he experienced some discomfort during the outing. He had a 6.08 ERA in five August starts. ... Manager Clint Hurdle said the decision to have INF Jung Ho Kang continue rehabbing his left shoulder injury in Indianapolis instead of Chicago had nothing to do with an investigation into an allegation that Kang sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman during the team’s June visit to Chicago.
Cardinals: RHP Mike Leake went on the 15-day DL because of shingles, while reliever Dean Kiekhefer was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Leake, who signed a five-year, $80 million deal in December, is 9-9 with a 4.56 ERA for the Cardinals. Mets: OF Yoenis Cespedes was back in the lineup for the Mets, who were still without 2B Neil Walker and SS Asdrubal Cabrera for the opener of a four-game series against the Marlins. Walker was sidelined a second day by a stiff back, while Cabrera, the reigning National League Player of the Week, exited Sunday’s game after aggravating a left knee injury that has sidelined him twice this season. Cespedes returned after sitting out a game with a nagging right quadriceps.
Twins: OF Danny Santana was put on the 15-day DL with a sprained left shoulder, an injury suffered when he collided with Robbie Grossman in the first inning Sunday in Toronto. He was examined Monday in Minneapolis.
