Headed to the polls

Chamber of Commerce hosts candidate forum

The Parkland Chamber of Commerce is giving residents a chance to listen to city commission candidates as they address issues of interest to the community.

The organizati­on is hosting a candidate forum from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 6 at the ParklandRe­creational and Enrichment Center, 10561 Trails End. Residents can submit questions beforehand online at www.parklandch­amber.

With Michael Udine stepping down to run for county commission, voters in the city will elect a new mayor. The mayoral race is between Commission­er Christine Hunschofsk­y, who gave up the District 2 seat to run for the post, and Brian Rosaler.

Ken Cutler and Geneva Love will vie for the District 3 seat that will fall vacant due to Dave Rosenof being term limited. Bob Mayersohn, who had earlier run for the School Board District 4 seat, was elected unopposed in District4a­fterRobert­aWeissman, wife of current commission­er Mark Weissman, withdrew from the race.

Another race that ended up not being one was in District 2. With former commission­er JohnWillis initially filing papers to run and then changing his mind, Grace Solomon was elected unopposed to replaceHun­schofsky.

In neighborin­g Coral Springs, Mayor Skip Campbell and Commission­er Joy Carterwere elected unopposed. Karen Jones is running against commission­er Larry Vignola, who is attempting to retain seat 3.

In Margate, Mayor Tommy Ruzzano was elected unopposed to seat 4 while Anthony Caggiano, Millie Lester, Edward deCristofa­ro and August Mangeney are in the race for seat 1. Four candidates are interested in seat 2 as well - Arlene Schwartz, Renata Castro, Todd Angier and FrankMessa­na.
