Rise in sales tax makes cents

- Bruce Roberts, Broward MPO deputy vice chair and commissioner, city of Fort Lauderdale

What is the power of a penny? For most people, it’s not a lot. We drop them in coin jars, find them in couch cushions, and leave them in trays at convenience stores. But for funding transportation and infrastructure improvements, a penny can be quite powerful.

On Nov. 8, voters in Broward County will have the opportunity to vote on raising the sales tax from6 to 7 cents to pay for transportation and infrastructure improvements throughout Broward County. Half of a penny would go to pay for transportation projects like traffic light synchronization, improved mass transit, bicycle and sidewalk improvements, and the construction of a light-rail system. The other half would help pay for infrastructure projects such as sidewalk and bicycle infrastructure, sewer and drainage improvements to counteract sea-level rise, and bridge repairs and maintenance.

Every project built will be subject to approval froman oversight board thatwould determine that the project is eligible and that all monies are being spent in accordance with state statute. Awebsite has been created that shows all proposed projects (both transportation and infrastructure) in Broward County, and includes an interactive map so that you can see exactly what projects are planned for your neighborhood. A penny might not sound like a lot of money, but taken together, it can improve travel times in our region, provide additional transportation options and help build stronger, more resilient communities.
