Campbell steps down as Miami Jackson assistant
Luther Campbell has stepped down from his assistant coach position with the Miami Jackson High football team after only three regular season games, the ex-rapper confirmed Thursday.
Campbell posted about his departure on Twitter and Instagram on Thursday morning:
“I’d like to thank the young men at Miami Jackson for the opportunity to coach them for the last 7 months because of some unforeseen circumstances I am resigning my position as coach, something I’ve never done in my 14 years of coaching in a season.
“I love my players, the alumni, I wish General Nation nothing but the best.”
Campbell, the Generals’ defensive coordinator, was hired at Jackson as part of a pair of high-profile coaching hires by the school this past offseason.
Jackson made history when it hired Lakatri on a Brunson to become the first female football head coach in state history.
The Generals won both their spring game and a preseason game against Coral Reef.
After losing its opening regular season game to Columbus, Jackson picked up a huge win two weeks ago when it stunned Booker T. Washington, then-ranked No. 2 in the nation.
In a 12-9 defensive struggle, Campbell’s defense forced six turnovers.
But the Generals, who had given up only 21 points over their first two games, followed that with a 36-7 district defeat at Cardinal Gibbons lastweek.
Campbell has previously coached in the same role at Miami Central, Miami Northwestern and Miami Norland.
His defenses typically ranked among the best in the county.
Jackson next plays Bolles, owner of a record 11 state championships, tonight in Jacksonville.
