A South Florida-based campaign dubbed getBlue aims to persuade JetBlue Airways to offer nonstop flights between Fort Lauderdale and Tallahassee.
Representatives from city, county and state government and Broward College gathered this week in Fort Lauderdale to show their support for the campaign, which seeks pledges from local residents and businesses that want to see more convenient and costeffective jet service Fort Lauderdale the state’s capital city.
The campaign aims to collect $2 million worth of non-binding ticket sale pledges from South Florida supporters by Oct. 21. The aim is to provide evidence to the airline’s decisionmakers that area residents and businesses are invested in having this new route.
“Our community needs direct access to the capital of state government, and together we can make this route a reality,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack between and Seiler, in a news release.
Discussions with JetBlue — led by local officials in both Tallahassee and South Florida — have been productive, according to campaign leaders.
However, JetBlue has not yet shown its hand. “We have no decisions regarding Tallahassee to announce at this time,” JetBlue spokesman Doug McGraw said in an email.
If the JetBlue route were to take flight, itwould be the first jet service between the cities in more than two years. Campaigners want JetBlue to offer service between Fort Lauderdale and Tallahassee.
