Meanwhile, your favorite credit card might provide a free extendedwarranty on your new microwave oven or other eligible purchase. Often, it’s for one year.
“We’ll add 24 months to yourwarranty,” states the website for Citi Card’s Select cards. “If your eligible item breaks, we’ll repair, reimburse or replace the item up to the amount charged on your Citi card, or up to $10,000, whichever is less.”
Several credit cards feature “price protection” in case the price of that $500 TV(or other costly item) drops soon after you take it home. “We will refund the difference up to $500 on eligible items if you find a lower price at any store within 90 days of purchase,” states Discover.com.
Certain Citi Cards offer to do that price check for you through something called “PriceRewind.” The idea is if you buy, say, a stove with the Citi Card and alert the complimentary rewind service (via CitiPriceRewind.com), the service will check hundreds ofwebsites for a lower a price over 60 days and refund you the price difference, if applicable. The refund can be up to $500 per item, with a limit of up to $2,500 per year. There are some hoops to jump – you need to log into your account online and upload a receipt when requested – but it’s potentially free money. An unusual freebie?
