City offers cash to boost education

- By Lisa J. Huriash Staff writer

The city of Coral Springs has agreed to pitch in taxpayer money to help highschool students. The city will spend $10,000 for extras not usually funded, such as SAT and ACT prep, or a writing program.

The cash will be split between J.P. Taravella High, Coral Springs High, Coral Glades High and Coral Springs Charter, all in Coral Springs, as well as Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, which is inParkland but has students from Coral Springs.

The money could be spent on whatever the principals feel necessary to “help fill the gap,” said Coral Springs Vice Mayor Dan Daley, who requested the item be discussed at last week’s meeting. The schools will be required to report to the city in June howit spent the money.

Daley said he hopes it will become an ongoing program.

“There will be some reasonable benchmark,” Daley said. “I’m hopeful that it will go well, and we can increase budget and school coverage next year. This is the beginning of what I hope will be the Coral Springs Education Fund.

“Slowly but surely we’ll get there for the betterment of our local students.”
