- Staff and wire reports

MIAMI BEACH — Former Dwyer standout Matt Elam faces marijuana, oxycodone and reckless driving charges after being arrested in Miami Beach.

Elam, who is a safety for the Baltimore Ravens, was arrested Saturday evening after police say he was speeding recklessly in a Range Rover with an armed passenger and a book bag with marijuana, cash and jewelry.

“Detectives detected a strong odor of fresh/burning marijuana and a big cloud of smoke emitting from inside the vehicle,” Miami Beach police wrote in charging documents.

The former Florida Gators star is facing charges of marijuana possession of more than 20 grams, possession of marijuana with intent to sell and possession of a controlled substance. He also was charged with reckless driving. His bail amount is $15,500, per prison records.

According to prison records, Elam, 25, was booked Sunday at 3:45 a.m. at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.

Elam was considered a five-star recruit out of Dwyer before being an All-American for the Gators. The Ravens selected him in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, but Elam played in just 41 games and started only 26 of them.

The Ravens already announced they would not resign Elam.
