■ RANGERS: Josh Hamilton’s bid to make the opening day roster ended after yet another surgery on his balky left knee. Hamilton, 35, had an arthroscopic procedure in Houston to repair damaged meniscus cartilage after experiencing pain last week while running at training camp. The latest knee procedure was the 11th in Hamilton’s career, and the third since he last played in the majors in 2015. He will be out 2-3 months.
■ REDS: RHP Anthony DeSclafani was scratched from his first scheduled start in Goodyear, Ariz. DeSclafani, 26, felt tenderness in his elbow after throwing batting practice this month. Manager Bryan Price said skipping the start, scheduled for Tuesday, was a precaution.
■ CARDINALS: Out of the big leagues last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery, RHP Lance Lynn pitched two innings as a split squad beat the Nationals 5-4 in Jupiter, Fla. Lynn, 29, allowed one run on four hits and a walk, mixing changeups and sliders among fastballs.
■ BRAVES: R.A. Dickey, in his Braves debut, allowed two runs on two hits over two innings in a 10-7 loss to the Tigers. The former NL Cy Young winner pitched for the Blue Jays last year, then signed with the Braves.
■ CUBS: Team owners hope to meet with Chicago officials in the next few months to plan a bid for the 2020 All-Star Game. Chairman Tom Ricketts said he’s not sure when discussions with the city will happen.
■ EXTRA INNINGS: Mets OF prospect Tim Tebow hit nine batting practice HRs during his first workout in Port St. Lucie, Fla. ...
