■ RANGERS: Josh Hamil­ton’s bid to make the open­ing day ros­ter ended af­ter yet an­other surgery on his balky left knee. Hamil­ton, 35, had an arthro­scopic pro­ce­dure in Hous­ton to re­pair dam­aged menis­cus car­ti­lage af­ter ex­pe­ri­enc­ing pain last week while run­ning at train­ing camp. The lat­est knee pro­ce­dure was the 11th in Hamil­ton’s ca­reer, and the third since he last played in the ma­jors in 2015. He will be out 2-3 months.

■ REDS: RHP An­thony DeS­clafani was scratched from his first sched­uled start in Goodyear, Ariz. DeS­clafani, 26, felt ten­der­ness in his el­bow af­ter throw­ing bat­ting prac­tice this month. Man­ager Bryan Price said skip­ping the start, sched­uled for Tues­day, was a pre­cau­tion.

■ CAR­DI­NALS: Out of the big leagues last year while re­cov­er­ing from Tommy John surgery, RHP Lance Lynn pitched two in­nings as a split squad beat the Na­tion­als 5-4 in Jupiter, Fla. Lynn, 29, al­lowed one run on four hits and a walk, mix­ing change­ups and slid­ers among fast­balls.

■ BRAVES: R.A. Dickey, in his Braves de­but, al­lowed two runs on two hits over two in­nings in a 10-7 loss to the Tigers. The for­mer NL Cy Young win­ner pitched for the Blue Jays last year, then signed with the Braves.

■ CUBS: Team own­ers hope to meet with Chicago of­fi­cials in the next few months to plan a bid for the 2020 All-Star Game. Chair­man Tom Rick­etts said he’s not sure when dis­cus­sions with the city will hap­pen.
