Brandt Moser just keeps adding to American Heritage’s already impressive collection of golf honors.

The long-time skipper for the Patriots’ boys team returned home Thursday after the National High School Athletic Coaches Association named him national golf coach of the year at an awards ceremony in Illinois earlier this week.

Moser, 56, has been leading Patriots teams to the state tournament atHoweyin-the-Hills since 2001. A seven-time Florida Dairy Farmers state golf coach of the year forHeritage, dating back to 1993, he was one of eight finalists for the national award.

“I was surprised and humbled to win,” Moser said.“WhenI listened to the others coaches’ stories on what they do and the obstacles they have, the success they have, I was truly shocked — I thought there were quite a few other candidates that were better than me.”

Last season, the Patriots to Moser led their third state title in five seasons. With all five players scoring in the 70s once in the twoday Class 2A tourney — three of them for both rounds — Heritage cruised to the championship with a 16-stroke victory over runnerPonte Vedra.

Along with state titles in 2014 and 2012, Moser also has guided the squad to five runner-up finishes. Heritage’s boys squad has placed at least second every year since 2011.

He also led the Patriot girls, nowcoached by Linda Sibio, to state titles in 2007 and 2008, plus a 2011 runnerfinish.

Moser, who counts numerous golf pros and coaches among his past players, also has served on theFHSAA’s golf rules committee for the past six years.

“He has been a great mentor to so many kids, a great leader for American Heritage,” Karen Stearns, the Plantation school’s athletic director, said. “We’re really excited for him and proud of him.”

Moser has had five individual state champions in his 21 years of coaching and has sent more than 20 athletes to college on golf scholarships, including last season’s SunSentinelGolfer of the Year Jonathan Cachon, who signed withUniversity of South Florida.
