Police seek driver who ran over man in road
Davie Police want to talk with the driver of a sport utility vehicle involved in a fatal collision with a pedestrian on June 25.
Dramatic footage from a traffic surveillance video captured Alfonso Ordonez’s last steps, taken as he tried to walk across State Route 7 just before midnight.
The 50-year-old man tripped on the median curb and fell. Seconds later, as he lay facedown and almost motionless, the vehicle struck him.
The driver didn’t stop. But evenwith the video as part of the investigation, police are not yet calling the incident a hit-and-run.
“We want to question the driver, to get their version. At this point we aren’t saying conclusively that this is a hit-and-run,” said Sgt. Mark Leone, the department’s spokesman.
“It’s plausible that the driver didn’t see him,” Leone said.
Ordonez was a vagrant whosometimeswandered the area intoxicated, but it wasn’t known whether he was drunk, Leone said.
Ordonez appeared unsteady as hewalked across the south lanes of the road, and after he tripped, he moved only slightly before hewas struck.
Before he tried to cross the road, Ordonez was with another man at the Shell Gas Station on the southwest corner of the intersection. The video shows a person running toward Ordonez, but that personwas just a couple of feet away when Ordonez was struck.
The vehicle involved was a silver or gray newer model small SUV, Leone said. He asked anyone with information to contact the Davie Police Department at 954-693-8200.
