Owls get first commitment for 2019

Florida Atlantic’s football teampicked­upits firstcommi­tment for the 2019 recruiting class Wednesday night when Dothan Northview (Ala.) wide receiver Da’Shawn Owens picked the Owls.

On Twitter, Owens announced his choice by posting a 32-second video that featured his highlights and FAU’s logo. The 6-foot-3, 207-pounder also claimed offers from Troy, Southern Miss, Bowling Green and Memphis.

FAU has two commitment­s in its 2018 recruiting class: Ocala Vanguard cornerback Dabarre Jenkins and Miami Northweste­rn athlete Chatarius “Tutu” Atwell. Atwell (5-foot-8, 155 pounds) plays quarterbac­k for the Bulls, but projects as a receiver for theOwls.

In February, first-year coach Lane Kiffin hauled in Conference USA’s best recruiting class, according to 247 Sports. He has also created headlines by offering scholarshi­ps to several middle-school football players.

FAU opens its season at home against Navy on Sept. 1. was the Sun Sentinel’s Palm Beach County Softball Player of the Year in 2012.

FloridaSta­te (55-8-1,24-0 ACC) spent the entire season ranked nationally in the top five before losing toLSU in the Super Regionals. The Seminoles have won the past four ACC championsh­ips and have appeared in the Women’s College World Series nine times.

Hanson will join St. Thomas Aquinas graduate Meghan King on the Seminoles’ pitching staff. King— the Sun Sentinel’s 2014 Broward Player of the Year — went 27-3 with a1.50ERA last year for Florida State.

FAU will return infielder Emily Lochten next year after she was named secondAll-America in 2017. Lochten hit .408 with 18 home runs and 36 stolen bases.
