Shea Ciriago, Broward Education Foundation
Shea Cir ia go is the executive director of the Broward Education Foundation, which plays a vital role in raising nearly $3 million for Broward County Public Schools each year. The foundation’s campaigns provide funding for programs and initiatives that touch the lives of more than 300,000 students in the district. Ciriago was most recently director of development. She says she’s a good fit for the role she has held since April because of her ability to listen, focus and bring all the moving parts together to create partnerships within civic and cultural communities and businesses including corporations.
Experience: Previously director of financial development for the YMCA of Broward County; director of corporate development, Jewish Federation of Broward County. Onthe job My job: In collaboration with Broward Education Foundation board of directors, I am responsible for the development, planning and implementation of fundraising strategies to support Broward County Public Schools. A typical day can include meeting with donors, business and community leaders to develop partnerships and reinforce the importance of quality education; strategizing with Broward County Public School initiative directors to enhance funding for programs for homeless students; activities like chess and debate and more; and facilitating partnerships between our communities
and schools.
Measure of success: The positive impact we have on our schools, and the teachers and students we serve. I am always mindful of the bottom line: the growth of the organization translates to the ability to help even more students reach their potential. Strategies Industry wisdom: Funding for a non-profit organization is never guaranteed. Relationship building and cultivation are the keys to success.
Professional development: The Association of Fund Raising Professionals has increased my knowledge base and the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations keeps me abreast of educational and legislative priorities.
Advice to young professionals: Don’t take things personally: NO only means no at that particular time. YES is only another visit away.
