A Port St. Lucie man is dead after he was run over at a gas station in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

The fatal collision happened Sunday at about 10:38 p.m. at 2320 W. Atlantic Blvd., the agency said.

Dwayne Castiglione, 41, had been seen jumping on the station’s garbage dumpsters, screaming, sitting and laying in the parking lot in the path of cars, according to the sheriff’s office.

Keith Toney, 36, of Pompano Beach, had just filled the tank of his 2013 Chevrolet Impala LT and was driving away when he thought something was wrong with his tires.

When Toney got out, he found Castiglione stuck beneath his sedan.

Toney called for help, lifted the Chevrolet with a borrowed jack and recovered the injured man.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue took Castiglione to Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, where he died.

“Mr. Toney did everything he could in this situation,” Broward Sheriff ’s Spokeswoman Gina Carter said Monday. “He flagged down help, lifted the car and got the person out. Unfortunately, Mr. Castiglione died.”

The case is still open and being investigated; Toney has not been charged with any offense.

Detectives do not believe Toney was impaired or that excessive speed or mechanical failures contributed to the accident, the agency said.
