Miami, Temple to renew series in 2020
CORAL GABLES — As members of the Big East, Miami and Temple met regularly.
Now it seems the two programs will renew their football series.
Mike Aresco, the commissioner of the American Athletic Conference on Tuesday announced the upcoming home-and-home series for theOwls andHurricanes during AAC media day in Rhode Island.
Neither Miami nor Temple has announced the matchup, although reports indicate the Owls would travel to South Florida in 2020, with the Hurricanes heading to Philadelphia in 2023.
The Hurricanes have dominated their all-time series against Temple, going 13-1 against the Owls with the lonelosscomingthefirst time the teams played in 1930.
But between 1992-2005, the Hurricanes won 13 straight against the Owls, outscoringTemple 578-136.
Thatsaid, Templehas improved since the two teams met regularly.
Last season, the Owls posted a 10-4 record and defeatedNavy 34-10 towin the AACchampionship.
But thetwo schools’ longstanding history isn’t the only reason fans might raise an eyebrowat thematchup.
Former Hurricanes coach Al Golden headed the Temple program for five seasons before hewas hired at Miami in 2010. of their own.
Hurricanes running back MarkWalton, receiver Ahmmon Richards, linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and kicker Michael Badgley were all named to the preseason All-ACC team releasedWednesday after last week’s media voting at conference’s kickoff event.
Walton, who rushed for 1,117 yards and 14 touchdowns last season, is expected to be the centerpiece of the Hurricanes offense this season. He ran away with the first running back spot, totaling 127 votes from 167 media members.
Only one player in the ACC — Louisville quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson — finished with a higher overall vote total thanWalton.
Both Richards and Quarterman, whowere freshmen All-Americans last season, finished second in voting at their respective positions, whileBadgley led all kickers with 52 votes to edge Florida State’s RickyAguayo.
Richards, a former Wellington High standout, had 934 yards last season, breaking Michael Irvin’s 31-year old freshman receiving record. Quarterman, meanwhile, finished second on the teamwith 84 tackles.
Last season, Badgley connected on 21 of 26 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards and averaged 63.5 yards on 88 kickoffs with 52 touchbacks.
The Hurricanes’ four preseason picks were second most in the conference behind Clemson, which had five players selected to the team.
Miami, which went 9-4 last season and is coming off its first bowl win in a decade, is set to open the season Sept. 2 against BethuneCookman. They open ACC play against Florida State on Sept. 16 in Tallahassee. their first postseason victory since 2006.
