The missing link? Sausage from sky is a mystery

- By Brett Clarkson Staff writer

Did it fall out of a passing plane? Was it dropped by a drone? Or can pigs fly after all?

All the Adair family of Deerfield Beach can say for sure is that the thing that went bump in the nightwas a load of frozen Italian sausage hitting the roof. And the loud bang at 4 a.m. Saturday had them leaping from their beds.

“It was like a bomb went off,” said Jenny Adair, 56, who lives in the house with her husband, Travis Adair, 71, and their son Austin Adair, 22.

Daylight revealed two packages on their lawn and another three on the roof. All told, it was about 15

pounds of frozen sausage.

And the meat mystery deepened.

The Adairs said they don’t think it’s likely the sausage drop was the result of some kids pulling a prank.

“We really don’t have any beef with anybody as far as I know, and I really don’t know anybody that would want to waste 15 pounds of sausage,” Travis said.

The meat made so much noise that theAdairs think it probably fell from a great height.

But their roof wasn’t damaged; wouldn’t that much sausage make more than a bite-sized mess? Well, not if it hit the peak, which is the strongest part of the structure.

Travis Adair said he was initially tempted to cook the meat. Hey, it’s not every day breakfast drops in like that. The meat didn’t smell bad and didn’t appear spoiled. But cooler heads prevailed. So they took some pictures of the sausage and threw it into the garbage.

But the strange story had more sizzle than expected. Before the Adairs could say “buon appetito,” their runin with the wayward foodstuff had gone viral, including a segment on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”

That has cast some light on theweirdness. Thepackaging led Kimmel and crew to Fussell’s Frozen Food in Arcadia, and from there to Williams Land Service in Myakka City, near Sarasota.

The owner of Williams Land Service, Jimbo Williams, said Thursday that every year he buys hogs at theManatee County Fair, and has them processed at Fussell’s. But he has no idea how meat intended for him ended up in Deerfield Beach.

“We give some meat away to our friends and stuff, butwe don’t have anybody down there in Deerfield,” he said.

But the meat mystery gaveWilliams a new slogan for the company’s Facebook page.

“Williams Land Service — We grind trees, not sausage.”
