North Lauderdale taxes, fire fee rise

- By Lisa J. Huriash Staff writer

North Lauderdale has a list of improvements for the upcoming year, including light replacements in city fields and street resurfacing.

To do it, property owners could expect to pay more in taxes. The property tax rate will decrease next year to $7.40 for every $1,000 in taxable value. The rate this past yearwas $7.50.

But because of rising property values — North Lauderdale’s shot up almost 10 percent — homeowners will still paymore.

The city expects to add an extra $702,000 more to the city coffers than last year. For the average house valued at $100,000, with a $50,000 homestead exemption, this means a city tax bill of $370.

The fire-assessment fee also is proposed to rise by $18 for a single-family home and $32 for a multifamily home. The rate will go from $197 to $215 for a single-family home; and from $334 to $366 for a multi-family home.

Other assessments are unchanged, such as the $216.02 solid-waste assessment and the $55.15Water Control District assessment.

Michael Sargis, the city’s assistant city manager, said among the improvements planned are:

Field light replacements, $925,000.

$1 million resurfacing on Boulevard.

$1.7 million sewer

Commissioners are also expected to give themselves a 3 percent pay increase. $1 million.
