Infant locked in hot car

Parents fought outside, cops say

An infant boywas intentiona­lly locked in a hot car on a warm April day as his parents fought over a former lover, a wallet and the car keys, Fort Lauderdale police said.

Thebaby, called L.B. incourt documents, survived his entrapment, which lasted from10 minutes to 30 minutes, according to estimates provided by the parents and his maternal grandfathe­r.

Chanelda Forestant, 20, and Brandon Michael Heaven, 22, both of Fort Lauderdale, were arrested Thursday.

The Broward state attorney’s office has charged them both with one count each of aggravated child abuse and child neglect without great bodily harm.

It was April 12 and the temperatur­e was around 80 degrees when police were called to the 800 block of Northeast 15th Avenue.

During an argument about Heaven’s ex-girlfriend, Forestant hid hiswallet andHeaven locked their baby inside the car that was parked in direct sunlight.

The enginewas off and windowswer­e up, police said.

Heaven held the car keys and refused to free the infant until Forestant turned over his billfold, according to police.

“The newborn was placed inside the car and intentiona­lly placed injeopardy as a bargaining ploy to resolve the disagreeme­nt between the parents,” an arrest report said.
