How to survive a high-rise fire
The National Fire Protection Association provides these tips to survive a blaze if you’re stuck in a high-rise fire:
PREPARATION
■ Familiarize yourself with fire protection features: Make a survey of your building and note all fire alarms, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers.
■ Know your exits: Note all available stairwells and emergency exits and have an alternative plan in case one is blocked by fire. Never use an elevator unless directed to do so by a fire department. ■ Test smoke detectors: They should be tested monthly and batteries replaced twice per year. ■ Special accommodations: Make note of anyone needing special accommodations, including children, the elderly or those physically disabled.
DURING A FIRE
■ Check doors: Feel all doors with the back of your hand. If the door is warm and the doorknob is hot, do not open it. If the door is cold, open slowly and crawl low under smoke. ■ Prevent smoke ventilation: Fill in cracks underneath doors with wet towels and blankets to prevent smoke from coming through. ■ Signal responders: Hang a white towel or sheet outside of a window to signal to emergency personnel.
■ Exit immediately: Never stop to gather personal belongings, but leave rapidly through any emergency exit route.
