Broad gas tax thorny Read more online

A July 27 letter to the editor writer reminded us that gasoline taxes are used to build/maintain our roadways. Thus, he writes, electric vehicles should also be taxed. The question is – How would the tax be levied? Vehicles are basically a user tax, collected as a function of fuel consumption. But how could an electric vehicle’s usage be determined? And conversely, should a benefit be recognized in terms of pollution reduction?

What about bicycles that certainly use the roads and also make it necessary to install special lanes and signage? The writer’s argument definitely has merit, but fair implementation seems challenging. Asimilar situation exists in our homestead exemption law. Exemptions certainly benefit homeowners, but citizens who rent their dwellings pay a far greater property tax.

So, electric vehicle owners get a free ride fromthe rest of us when it comes to roadway expenses. A free ride also extends to owner occupied property owners at the expense of renters— a group that can ill afford to subsidize others. See more at SunSentinel.com/ opinion/letters
