Feeding South Florida, a hunger-relief organization under the Feeding America network of food banks, was recently awarded a donation of $100,000 during its SummerHunger EndsHereCommunity Breakfast inDavie.

The donation was made possible by the Miami Marlins and presented by keynote speaker, David Samson, president of the MLB team, as well as Alan Alvarez, director of theMarlins Foundation community outreach.

“The role of sports and the role of our team is to do everythingwe can as much as we can to let people know that we care and that we’re not just going to be there when the cameras are on,” said Samson during his speech.“We’re not just going to be there when it’s convenient.”

Alvarez said the$100,000donation is part of the foundation’s Marlins Charity Partner Empowerment Fund, which awards a gift of $25,000 each, funded primarily by players, to four nonprofit organizations every season. Feeding South Florida was one of the previous partners in 2014 among others throughout the years, such as Youngat ArtMuseum, South Florida After School All-Stars, Best Buddies and more.

The foundation decided to make a larger donation this season to one organization that has received funds inthe past incelebration of the fifth anniversary since its establishment, as well as the hosting of the 2017 All-StarWeek atMarlins Park.

“Feeding South Florida is really helping people that are in most desperate need,” Alvarez said. “Not being able to wake up and knowwhere your next meal is and having Feeding South Florida in the community addressing those needs is truly special.”

The donation will go towards a new truck that will help Feeding South Florida distribute an additional 3 million pounds of food throughout the South Florida Community.

“There’s a lot of people that need help, and hopefully people will get involved and help,” said CEO and President Paco Vélez of Feeding South Florida.
