Outreach center hosts backpack drive in Davie
The HOPE Outreach Center is hosting its annual Back to School Drive in Davie, asking for donations of backpacks and school supplies. The center’s goal is to collect enough supplies to equip 400 children in Kindergarten through fifth grade.
“The annual back to school backpack drive makes it possible for children in need to receive a new backpack filled with the supplies necessary to have a successful academic year,” executive director for the center Jeanne Tamargo said. “Children who have all the tools they need to attend school have an increased chance of success in school. Success in school will help break the chain of poverty.”
The HOPE Outreach Center was founded in Davie in 1995 and is dedicated to helping peoplewho suddenly find themselves in a hard position. The nonprofit’s name, HOPE, is an acronym for Helping Other People Every day.
Supplies being accepted include backpacks, pencils, composition books and more. Donations are being accepted through Aug. 10.
“The donations we receive for the Back to School Drive help children begin the school year on equal footing with their peers,” Tamargo said. “One can never underestimate the importance of having the proper tools regardless of the grade or the age.”
The HOPE Outreach Center is accepting supplies through Aug. 10 on the east side of Saint David Parish Hall, 3900 SouthUniversity Drive, Davie. Times vary.
